steering help for a 77 4x4

I need a little help from anyone who has had similar problems. My steering fluid has been leaking for some time. Now it seems that it is spraying out like a sprinkler. I could hear that there wasn’t any fluid left, and when I lifted the hood it was all over inside. It has really made a mess. It seems the steering pump is ok since it is not leaking. Could it be just a donut between the gear box and steering shaft that is old and needs replacing? Or do I need a whole new gear box. This may not be enough info. I have been adding fluid often for a while now. But it seems that has all come to an end and something needs to be replaced before i drive it again. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I would first suspect a blown hose. Clean the area, fill with fluid. Then start it and check for leaks, may need someone to turn the wheel while you look for leaking fluid.
