You know, we have a really great forum here. You ask a question and before long, all sorts of nice people are trying to help you. Not so with other car forums. Today for example, I've tried all day long to get some basic advice on our Contour - and wound up completely empty handed. Not even a single response despite plenty of viewings. I'm glad this forum has so many fabulous people involved. No wonder FTE is numero uno!
Most dealer techs cringe whenever they see a Contour roll in.
Man I hate those things
The nurse that comes to my house has a 96 Contour with all sorts of problems. She has this orange foam all over the inside the overflow tank that looks sick. It's got a K&N filter too. Glove box broke not to long ago. Too bad the plugs are so easy to change. (I love this forum by the way ) Not as easy to work on the transmission.
Aero is completely right. I am on another forum and it is nothing like this one. The people are great and all but the in-depth knowledge just isn't there. They are very "stealer" oriented. Kinda funny actually.
Mostly just to vent some frustration. I did enjoy racerguy's comment about cringing techs. I can certainly see why. Seems as if Ford gave no forethought whatsoever as to maintenance or repair issues on the Contour. I really appreciate the offers of assistance but this is not the forum for that. BTW, the link is to the very place I was trying to find some answers.
Like Ken1, I go to other forums, I check out fullsizechevy.com and chevytalk and gm-trucks.com for my Yukon, I have to go to all 3 of them to get an answer. I left a post once for some old front Chevy hubs for my old '64 chevy pick up as the hubs are so shot the races fall in for the bearings. Can't find new ones or decent old ones and thought I would get an answer on that. Got one email from a chap trying to sell me old ones that needed to be rebuilt for $75 bucks a piece. I can rebuild my old ones if I knew what to do. I can't figure it out, there has to be someone with old hubs after converting to disk brakes or knows someone or has a wrecking yard etc etc...
This site.....No comparison. I learned more from this group and even a lot of common sense stuff that can apply to my other cars as well.
I am sure glad I met up with you all for my Aerostar (may she go to a good home) and got 178,000+ miles out her and she still looked and ran good.
The Dodge neon site I go to as well now seems okay so far. I hope I can get 178,000 out of the Neon
Nappers,
how much wear in those old Chev hub bearing outer race holes?
mic. OD of new race and ID of the hole and give us the #
if less than 0.002", can use a carbide dimple punch mulitple times around the inner circumferance of the hole
if more than 0.002", I would go to commercial/industrial bearing wholesaler/retailer and get a bearing that dupes all specs and with 0.10" or 0.20" larger outer race OD...have a machine shop cut the race hole out to fit....they do these types of bearing oversize replacements daily...they will also put on a special finish cut that will prevent race spinning...
if you do cut out the inner bearing race hole, remember you will need oversize inner seal....same bearing supplier will be able to take care of minor detail
also, slight oversize outer race OD sizes are available for some models
can also try hard bronze or stainless steel shim stock but I would not trust it to lock the race and keep it from spinning
Well this is cetainly the best Aerostar forum. However, for Subarus the Ultimate Subaru site is a great one. On most other car forums there seems to be nothing but emphasis on hotrodding info and very little good technical advice.
Yes this IS the best forum no doubt. Says something about people that drive Aerostars.
Heck they even help you with an old '64 CHEVY
Thanks 96, I will tear it off soon as weather clears (I'm tired of the rain and cold).
It may be a while though, it has a burned valve and awaiting to pull a rebuilt 350 out of the father in law's '63, he wants a 6 cylinder back in his for originality.
Well, I agree, most Aerostar owners have better than average vehicles, and we have little reason to mess with a good thing. There are problems, just like with any other vehicle, I like the predicatability issue, most of the problems are common, and inexpensive to resolve. Many can be permanently fixed with the proper knowledge and tools. These vans can be good for up to 400,000+ miles, and you can't say than about many other vehicles.
love those old early '60s Chevvy PU's, real classics....beautiful rig in med metallic powder blue, burnt orange or black
best V8 engine ever made in America, Chebby small block
