For those of you who dont take Y-block Magazine or follow the other Y-block website, beware of new lifters sold on e-bay. Often they have been made in Argentina, Brazil, or China (sorry Lobo).
Issue number 70 of Y-block Mag had an article done my John Mummert describing some of the problems he was finding with the new parts coming from South America. They included out of range hardness, rough surface finish on stem and face, improper push rod socket radius, faces ground flat, and more.
If you think all of this is overtedious detail, consider what Mummert said at the end of the article: "If the engine is run for 20 minutes with multiple lifters failing the engine will need to be completely rebuilt".
So be careful where and what you buy. Schumann's Sales and Service, Inc., and John Mummert are two trusted sources. They are pricey, $150 to $200 a set!
thats good to know, also people with other engines(FEs) have also having lifter problems (hydralics) with this crap that comes from China...I guess alot of cam manufactures get their lifters made there...does anyone in the USA make them anymore.????
Dont know hiball. But I just sent off a question to an e-bay seller of rod bearings to make sure they were USA made. They were. Havent heard of bearings being made in S. America or China, but since everything else we can buy comes from China, thought to double check.
its sad we are losing all our manufacturing base in this country..I just bought an new old stock FORD cam for a yblock, think I'll try to locate some old stock lifters, thank god we still make bearings here...I think alot of the timing gears and chains are Chinese too, be careful
Reds Headers in CA sells lifters and other internal parts for the Y block. I bought a set of rockers from him. Very good quality. Better that stock since the rocker arms had bushngs installed and were mounted on hardened shafts.
