Can anyone tell me if, when installed, the windshields on our trucks used a sealer as well as the gasket? I am going to the parts yard today to get a windshield for my truck and they won't remove it for me. So I need to figure out what to bring with me to get it out. Thanks.
These trucks do not use any other kind of sealer except for the rubber gasket/seal. I have however seen some people use other kinds of sealer on them if they leaked after installation. I would assume you will be installing a new gasket/seal when you install to your truck so, to remove the glass from the part's truck just use a razor knife to slice the old gasket/seal and push the glass out of the window frame from the inside. -Ed
The gasket is all that keep the windsheild in, but it is always possible someone may have used sealer along the way. A good sharp knif would take care of the gasket though. There is a proper procedure for getting it out, if you wanted to salvage the gasket, although, it is recommended to put a new seal in when replacing the windsheild. According to my Haynes manual, you remove it much like the rear window, and reinstall about the same way. I still would sacrifice the gasket for removal to reduce the risk of cracking it while removing. If you can get your hands on some piano wire, it wouldn't be bad to have along, (many body shop supply places will have it)
Just do not nick the edge of the glass! It creates a stress riser effectively. That one little nick will half the strength of the glass. I found out the hard way.
If is just the old windshield rubber - the oldest method is to sit in the seat with both feet against the windshield and push with both feet. Try to sit in the center of the seat with both feet an equal distance from center and pust steady and gently. Has worked in the past.
I actually removed it last night. Just put a new blade in the razor knife and removed the chrome corner pieces and cut all the way around. It came out pretty easily.
I'm guessing you didn't save the gasket then? I wonder if the removal can be done saving the glass and gasket. I just installed a new windshield 6 months ago! I've got the wide chrome trim.
Check out the site sponsors, most all of them have the seal available. I got mine at LMC but, I have seen them at Jeffs bronco Graveyard and some other site sponsors. -Ed
