What happens if you add to much engine oil?
(Say a quart)
Will it leak out near the rear of the block?
I just change to syn. oil and added a by-pass filter.
I think I may have added .75 to 1 quart too much.
I know that was stupid, but it was a mistake.
Now I have a large oil spot after parking.
It looks like it is from the back of the block, but I can't see where.
Everything is dry from above, but it runs down the back of the block and around the TQ converter cover and drips down from there.
I had the same issue. You might have small leaks on your intake boots and the CCV is pushing the excess out there and it is running to the back of the block to drip. The factory clamps have a small flaw that over time can allow leaks at the boots. I just drained about .5+ quart out and the drip completely went away.
What a coincidence I read an article 3 or 4 days back in a local newspaper and according to the author “OVER FILLING” is pretty detrimental to the engine or at least may be in theory. I ‘am not trying to scare you or anything but just do a google(please don’t take me in a wrong sense)… I found this as the second hit
Our trucks call for 15 quarts, but I have put 16 in on occasion without any issues at all. I've heard of oil coming out the dipstick tube in extreme cases though.
I always fill my rig up with an extra quart of oil. Between it leaking out and be running the truck (parked) on hills I worry about enough lubrication. Been doing this for years now and I haven't had a problem.
when i worked @ ford years ago we had a 7.3 keep coming in with rear main seal leaks. come to find out the dipstick rubbed on the 4th main bearing cap and showwed 2 quarts low no matter how much oil was added. we drained almost 5 gal of oil out of it the last time ( this was not a psd ) the crankshaft counterwight were hitting the oil causing the leak. I know this is extreme but i check both sides of the dipstick from now on. I'm not saying this is your problem just passing on info learned.
