Hey everyone, i might be having some oil usage problems with my truck (in my signature). When i got it from the dealer, about a week later i checked the oil after they changed it and i noticed it was down a quart. I added a quart and that was about 2 weeks ago. Today i checked the oil and its down a quart again... No smoke, oil pressures normal, nothing abnormal. Do you think a full quart of oil is sitting up in the engine or what? Should i be concerned with this?
From what i can see there are no leaks. I forgot to mention this truck sat for 5-6 years until he drove it to the dealer and we bought it two days later.
Check it all - it won't be a leak these guys are talking about, it could be escaping as vapors out of the PVC or other hoses.
As a sidenote, I've been doing a lot of (internet) research over the last week (across many boards), and if you're using oil, it seems like you're going to use even more with Mobil 1 with these Ford modular V-8's (and maybe with other motors, but across mod V-8 platforms this Mobil 1 use seems to hold true).
I have been a Mobil 1 user since the early 1990's, but I do believe I'm going to switch to Pennzoil synthetic just to try it out over 3000 miles to see if I don't have to add a quart as well.
As for your initial adding(s), if you didn't check the oil level immediately after the dealership changed it, there is no way to know what they filled it to (this, coming from seeing many vehicles leave oil change places while low one, or more, quarts).
The oil could be sitting high if it was really crudded and sludged up in there. How many miles and what did the 'clean' 1-week old oil look like on the dipstick?
Sorry was away for the weekend. Basically 5 minutes before GammaDriver posted how i might use more oil with Mobil 1 my uncle told me the same thing so im not going to use that.
When i checked it, i noticed nothing unusual and it was clean. In the next few days im going to check it again and then change the oil soon (dont know what im going to use yet, recommendations). About 200 miles away from 4k since i bought it
Depsite me saying it, I've been using M1 until recently when I learned that it burns off faster. My next oil change will be Pennzoil synthetic - many vehicle boards' posters seem more impressed with its base and additives than Mobil 1's.

I have been using Mobil 1 in my Mark VIII for the last 12 years and do not use more than about 1/2 cup of oil between 5,000 mile changes. My MarkVIII has about 195,000 miles on it now.

I dunno, I'll report back after I change.
I'm down half a quart from an oil change that I did (that I know was topped off after initial start-up, 'cause I did it), and my 4.6L has burned over half a quart of M1 in 1000 miles.

Are you using 10W30?
I'm using 5W20 in both my Navigator and the Mark VIII.

That's what I'm using - and it always has seemed to have gone fast.
But go read the other boards enough and I think you'll agree that people are suspecting M1 burns off faster than Pennzoil. I've used M1 for over a decade, so it's not like I want to change, or that I'm selling something here.
That is one of the good things about America, we can always change to something else when we want to. The M1 has always worked for me and I'll continue to use it.
Just checked my oil again and had to add a quart and the fill line was still about 1/8" from the Max dot in the dipstick. Going to do an oil change this weekend im right around 4500 miles, still need to decide on an oil.
