Might as well replace it, the gears and bearings are probably pretty worn anyway. I put a rebuilt steering gear in my 84 F150, picked it up at Advance Auto Parts for I think around $190. It's a heavy son of a gun, try to find someone to give you a hand getting everything lined up. It's not a huge job, takes about an hour to change out if you are using regular hand tools.
I have learned from past experience that some items shouldn't be purchased "rebuilt" (e.g. GM A/C compressors)...just wondering if this applies to the Ford power steering box.

I know how that goes! I haven't had a problem with mine yet and it has been in there for almost a year now.
I have the same problem with my truck and I have received alot of advice to replace it with a new one. I haven't checked into the price difference yet.

Price difference isn't a concern, as this isn't an item you have to replace but once (or twice for some of you million-milers). But, I don't want to have to do it twice if the rebuilds have a reputation for crappiness...
I replaced mine three years ago, I bought it from CarQuest because a friend of mine that had replaced several Ford boxes, thought they where the best. I paid I think $189 for it. I have no complaints works well.
You can buy a new or remaned anyplace without fear! That is a vital part and if it fails then the seller and MFG will be held responsable or damages! So they rebuild them and to OEM specs!
I replaced mine with a rebuilt about a year and a half ago or so. After turning 35" mud tires for over a year I dont have any complaints yet. Not a bad job at all, just needed an extra hand holding it up to stick the bolts in.
I paid about $190 at napa for mine last summer. No problems, like everyone else, and it made a HUGE difference in steering response. The truck drives like new.
all the steering boxes are the same from 1980-1994 (I believe 1994) Therefore, they are generally pretty cheap to buy. I just picked up one for my 1986 F250 from Napa for $130.00 with core. I've seen them on Ebay for $140.00 without core charge. Good luck. It's only about a half-hour job changing them if you don't break the power steering lines taking them out. Plenty of PB blaster with help you right out and make sure to seperate your pinion to drag link connection before you unbolt the steering box from the frame with it's three attachment bolts. I would plan on changing out the power steering lines while you are there because they are generally ready to be changed if the steering box is shot due to age.
