I have an '80 f100 w/300 6. Here lately my heater fan sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. I checked the fuse with a meter and checks out ok. In the service manual Ford talks about a fuseable link for the heater. Could this be my problem? where do I look for the fuseable link? Under the dash or in the engine compartment?
Thanks for all the help here.
There is no fusible link to the heater, just power feeds via fuse 14 (30 amps) to the blower motor and blower motor resistor assembly either of which can function intermittently until one or both fail completely.
When it doesn't work, does it work at all at any speed? If it is just dead in low through medium but works on High or vicec versa, then it is your resistor. Dead in all modes then I would suspect loose connection at switch or the motor is on it's last legs where the brushes sometimes work and other times it doesn't.
If you can hurry to figure it out, I just saw a resistor on Ebay this afternoon for a decent price. If you miss it, you can always pull one from the local pick a part (Junk yard).
The resistor went out on mine but it was just a hairline crack so if the truck vibrated just right, it would work then it wouldn't. Mine always worked on high though, just the lower speeds were dead. I got my replacement from the yard and it works fine so used isn't necessarily bad.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt so maybe its the motor. I checked all the connections under the hood and they check ok with a meter, so maybe its the motor bushings. I'll look for the resistor speed switch under the hood. I saw the diagram in the Ford repair book.
Lee, thanks for the tip.
Ok. I'll check the motor. Your discription is exactly what the thing is doing. works ok then quits. As soon as this dumn rain stops, I'll take a look-see. who says it doesnt rain in Eastern Oregon
I finally figured out what was wrong with my heater blower. there is a short in my stearing column that causes my turnsignals not to flash, but it also causes my heater blower not to function. I've had the stearing wheel off the column, but there are so many wires its hard to know what I'm looking at. When I jiggle my ignition switch the turn signals start working and the heater works. so I guess it's in the ignition switch.
Thanks to everyone for the great help!
