Where and what circuit do you put a fuseable link in?

It depends on what year vehicle you are talking about. The very old vehicles didn't have any fusible links. When they started using them it's usually out near the starter solenoid, where the main feed wires are. They are usually installed in this very "upstream" or the beginning source of the circuit. And they usually feed large main circuits. On some of the trucks they used one large one to feed the whole electrical system of the truck.

The newer trucks still use them, but use fewer since they started using the large maxi fuses to supply circuits in the underhood fuse box. Most older vehicles didn't even have a underhood fuse box like they use now.
