I have a 76 360 with the electronic ignition going in a 66 F100. Would it be wiser to obtain a good used points distributor, or how difficult is it to wire up the electronic ign in the 66? I still have the 76 F100 complete that the engine came out of. Thanks in advance
If its a pertronix electronic ignition then it's just a matter of having a hot lead to the red wire coming from the module and then the black (-) going to the coil. If you've got the brain (little square box on the fender) then it'll be a bit more complicated. So what kinda of ignition system is it anyways?
Sounds like you have the duraspark ignition from the 76, right?
if so, I did the same thing. Easy swap out. Save the harness for the duraspark and you are good to go. If it is Pertronix, even easier. I would recommend getting a hotter 12v coil with internal resistor so you don't have to screw with the resistor wire in the 66. Just my 2
Get the harnes from the ignition module to the distributor and coil. Get the the harness with the red and white wire (harness) at the ignition module.
Need duraspark module (Motorcraft brand)
Need to check if donor harness will match up to existing coil.
Take you time when removing the harness. Here a diagram for the original ford duraspark setup - https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...=94669&width=0 http://www.jason.fletcher.net/tech/d.../duraspark.htm
I went with the Dura spark on my 65 with 352 and I am very happy with mine. Made a big differance over points. Starts easier not near as cold blooded and getting alot better gas mileage.
The electronic module mounted on the driver side fender will have two wire harness, one will have a red wire and white wire on on harness. The red wire and white wire harness on ignition module is what feeds positive power to the module and what also powers the coil.
Disconnect this two wire harness at the ignition module. Using a test light to check these two wires. With the key in the START position is what powers the white wire on ignition module side and should have a positive feed. With the key in the ON position check if the red wire on ignition module is getting a positive feed.
How about the Crane XR-I ? Its only two wires. You simply swap out the points inside the distributor with the xr-i module, hook one wire up to the coil and the other to the ignition resistor wire, thats it. It has an adjustable rev-limiter too! no modules to burn out and its 65 bucks.
