Oil change question...

Well, did my first oil change this weekend..
The rest have been comped by the dealer...
Anyway..went pretty smooth until I took the filter off...
I was not ready for the top heavy nature of this large of a filter with
two quarts of oil...Slipped out of my hands and proceeded to make a
mess....
No biggie..sopped it up and the rest went well....

My question is...Is there any problem poking a hole in the bottom
of the filter to drain it...then removing it???
If no problem...What is best to poke a hole in it with???

Chris..

Same here, luckily a friend told me about puncturing it before my first change. I found it worth the extra $1-2.00 for the K&N oil filter it has a 1” wrench nut on the bottom that makes it easer for install and removal

Yea I turn the filter a 1/2 turn loose first, punch a good hole in the bottom of it, and then turn it a little more to release the air lock and let it drain faster. I dumped one of my filters all over myself one time when it slipped out of my hands - I've been punching a hole every time since!

another thing you may want to look at when doing the oil change is a Fumoto Valve that replaces the oil plug. it has a ball valve in it, and it is a no-mess way to drain the oil. i got mine from DieselSite i believe, so check it out-

I did the hole punch once w/o checking to see if I could get the filter loose. ended up crushing the filter body after trying first a filter end wrench, then a regular strap wrench and haveing to step up to a chain type strap wrench. after crushing the filter I just kept tearing at it with pliers till all that was left was the filter mouniting flange, I removed it very gently with a nice long alignment punch and ball peen hammer. Never could figure out why the filter locked on there, the new one screwed on fine.

I am so glad I am not the only one that has done the big filter spill on my first oil change. Ruined a pretty decent work sweatshirt that way. I punch the bottom of the filter every time now. Never thought about checking to see it I could get it loose first though.... Good idea.

Then you get the biggest flat-bladed screwdriver you have, hammer it through the filter sideways (Below the pickup), and crack it loose as if you had a grip on a 4-point tire iron.

oh ya, that was the step I used after the chain type filter wrench, it assured total dustruction of the filter housing.

Filter

Curious, what exact function does the filter housing serve when you are done wtih the filter? I'm sure the filter crusher at the recycler's doesn't car either.

I didnt want to keep the filter housing for anything, I was just a little panicked that I couldn't get it loose with any of the conventional methods and ended up haveing to " chisel " the flange off the filter adapter.
