Get three quarts of Synthetic ATF, a 4 or 5 foot section of fuel line, and a bucket and flush out the rootbeer! There is a line that comes out of the hydro and goes down to the reservoir on the pump. The one you are looking for has a flimsy hose clamp, not a threaded pressure line. Remove that line at the hydro and replace with your long piece of fuel line and run it over the fender and into the bucket. Clip or tape it to the bucket. If you can, draw the fluid that is in the reservoir out before you start. It's easier to have two people, one to keep the reservoir full of good new fluid, and one to move the steering back and forth with an occasional depression of the brake pedal. Somewhere around the two quart mark you should start seeing grenadine instead of rootbeer! Stop and replace your hose and you are done. For the next couple of nights, leave the steering wheel all the way to one side overnight and all the way the other the next. Alternate. This helps work the little air bubbles out of the lines.
It's all the crap (and possibly air) in the fluid really. Look at the color vs new ATF and you'll see what I mean. Your pump is probably starting to go too but a lot of people have had success just replacing the fluid. I'm ready to do it again at 185k after doing it at about 100k. My pump (which will be replaced fairly soon maybe after 200k miles...) doesn't whine much, just doesn't have any low speed power. At least not compared to my dad's 2002 model which will easily turn the wheels back and forth at stop with the brakes on. I recently did my ball joints and that helped reduce the drag on them quite a bit, but again I have 185k.
My steering whines sometimes, but is just low on fluid, i know i know...gotta leak somewhere but I can't find it, it's a slow one ! and don't see fluid drippin anywhere on driveway when steerin. maybe urs is just low too ? easier way to get the air out of ur lines is to jack up the front end w/ truck running and move wheels left to right 10 times w/ out a load on them...if u do this on the ground the air in the lines could hurt ur system.
