I was just reading a posting about wheelchair users and their Ford Vans and it got me thinking......How many people on here are wheelchair users...what do you drive...what mods have you done to your vehicle so you can drive it??????
I'm a paraplegic from a birth defect and I drive a '99 Explorer Sport. I have hand controls and a 4 function spinner ****. You can see pics of my vehicle and mods in my gallery.
It controls my turning signals and windshield wipers. I have two other special function buttons down on the hand control itself that controls my high beams and horn.
Yes I have cruise control and I use it quite often. Yes sometimes my hand does cramp up but the cruise control gives me a chance to flex and work out the cramps.

We had a quadraplegic racing at our stock car track for a few years. He has limited use of his hands. He did quite well but wasn't always real consistant because his arms got tired in the longer races. He velcroed his steering hand glove to the **** on the wheel. His other hand worked the throttle and brake. His pit crew put him in the car and took him out after the race. They also put a strap around his chest area to hold him tighter in the seat because sometimes his upper body would slump forward a bit and he couldn't get it back to where it belonged.
He drives a ummm Chevy van on the street. He has a lift to get him and his chair into the van and then he has someone slide him into the driver's seat.
Now, what would happen in the event of a bad accident or fire in the car? Wouldn't that be VERY dangerous for the driver, being unable to get out of the car under their own power? I mean, if the guy rolls it on the back side of the track, and the car catches fire? Is the pit crew going to get there on time?
Then again, with Nomex, and quick response of EMS on scene, perhaps it's not much of an elevated concern..
That was a concern for sure.
He had a good onboard extinguisher system and wore way more than the minimum required safety gear.
Our rescue crew said that they didn't have a problem with him racing. They figured they could get to him fast enough. Our track is 3/8 mile so it's not all that far for emergency people to go.
I'd love to race a truck across the desert or in the CORR series. There's a driver in the series who's a high level paraplegic....Evan Evans...he drives a Bowtie.
