Even though I probably should recycle them, I'm to lazy and just throw them in the trash. I stil cant believe these darn things cost $30 to replace, its rediculous.

That's how the printer companies pay for the printers. They actually lose
money on the initial sale of the printer but will recoup their loses when you purchase the ink cartridges. You can buy a cheap printer for around $30 and then you have to pay $30+ for the cartridge. Does that make sense?
Several years ago I remember reading that some European country was suing a printer manufacturer about this. Never did hear the end result.
Ya now it's funny but this general topic is popping up on other boards I frequent as well. I recycle to get the coupons or give em to my wife's co-worker to do it for a charity.
I switched to a laser printer. Got tired of paying and refilling (PITA if you ask me) the cartridges all the time.
The consumables for it are higher, but I can get a refill kit for laser toner (all 4 colors for the price of one toner off the shelf), and only have to do it a couple times a year.
Ebay is the only way to go. I can get 14...that's 14 cartridges for my Epson printers for just over $30. Office Depot wants almost that much for one! I've only had one bad one in three years of doing this, and I go through a lot of them at my store.

Is that for name brand or aftermarket? Does your Epson require a chip resetter? Ours does that's why I'm hesitant to go the aftermarket way.
I haven't recycled them, but I have reused them. I wonder what they actually do with them; extract the gold off the contacts like silver from X-rays?
I've been tossing around the idea lf a laser printer as well, cause I buy a ink cartridge and print a few things then it's several months before I print anything again and the new cartridges are pooched. I don't print pictures with it because anything worth printing is worth getting printed at a place that prints digitals.
There are a couple of companies around that have started selling or refilling your cart. I believe Office Max is also starting it. I have been using a refill company that charges about half of new without a problem.
