Any time you're dealing with rusty exhaust parts you don't know what you'll run into.
I've done some studs that were broken but turned out easily with pliers. I've done others that needed drilling and heating and cursing and and and.
One thing I've found on these is that taking short cuts usually takes longer. First thing is remove the inner fender liner and maybe the shock and shock mount. It just makes the job a lot easier when you can get at what you're trying to fix.
vw was no different some easy some hard ,some i pulled the head as the 5 cylinder left no room for problems and bench drill ed them out. but in a vw they always broke flush with the head . the extra long manifold on a 5 cylinder would always warp and twist causeing the studs to snap off.
fix was a very strong case hardened 8mm stud. a 8mm thick soft steel washer and a washer headed nut, haveing a machine shop plan the manifold true. never saw them back.
audi letter came out with a gm like manifold that had a flex cuppler that
allowed some flex then a header type manifold like they still use.
