"Key-in" Chime
"Key-in" Chime
Can anybody tell me how to disable the "key-in-ignition" chime? I'm sure I'm not the only superduty owner who frequently wants to get out of the truck but leave the key in the ignition (with engine off). Often I just want to leave the radio on, sometimes I'm just getting out for a moment and don't want to take the key with me. With the awesome combo-lock on the driver door I don't worry about locking my keys inside.

WolfCreek, the way I did mine, is. I removed, three screws and the small piece of plastic under the steering column, next turn the ignition switch on, do not start, depress the small unlocking button with a small screwdriver and remove the key cylinder, the remove the small contacts that are attached to the end of a single black wire. Tape the end and just let it lay. Doing it this way, the modification can be reversed. Then assemble in reverse, takes about 10 minutes. There is a short-cut, just cut the wire after removing the plastic piece, I chose the longer method.
After I posted my request for info, I realized I could/should have searched first. Of course, this topic has been covered a number of times at FTE. Here's a thread:
<a href="https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-458339-Key-Light%20Ding%20Ding%20...Ding%20Ding">Key/Light Ding Ding ...Ding Ding</a>
Sounds like a simple procedure to disable, but I am bummed that it isn't some computer thing like the seat belt chime disable procedure. That one is so easy (when following instructions found at FTE), and so reversible.

I took the fuse panel cover off my 02 F250,,, that exposes the wire loom coming out of steering column, and cut the black/pink stripe wire coming from key tumbler,,, down there it is easier to butt-splice back if you ever wanted to,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but who would ?
I am with Jm2k i pulled out the key cylinder and just put some electrical tape over the copper contacts and that was it has been that way for 4 yrs stil going took about 2 minutes.....no need to cut anything
I tried to tape the contacts on the key tumbler,,, looked like tape could get "balled" up in there,,,, and who knows what could happen then,,,, perhaps jam the tumbler and make it hard to get out,,,, I like the cut and run method,,,,,,,,,,, but whatever anyone prefers,,,,, Happy to be "dingless"
I'm probably going to do this... too many times I get out of the truck with the key in the ignition and the chime drives me nuts! It would also be nice to leave the driver's side door open with the key in ACC so I can listen to the radio.
After disconnecting my seat belt switch, this has gotta be a MUST DO for me.
I've been thinking about a pushbutton and a relay to do a "toggle off" sorta thing. Put the key in, turn to RUN or ACC, push the button to quiet the chime. It will stay off until the next time the key is cycled. If I do that, I'll post a schematic.

Today I performed the method to kill the key-in ignition chime when door is open, as recommended by toddyw, works great, took less than five minutes.
I pulled the plastic holder with the spring contact out of the cylinder and taped the end, than left it hanging loose, re-installed steering column cover. DONE!!
Thanks for a great remedy, to a problem that has bugged me since January '06.
Being able to open the door with the key still in ignition is music to my ears!!!

A long while back I read this post, and cut the wire. Silenced that @#$%^&* chime for good.
