just wondering if anybody has put a 5 speed into an F250 4x4. I was thinking one out of a late 80's but wondering about the bell housing for a 360/390. I'm sure there will be other concerns as well-crossmember, driveshaft, clutch. Thanks for any info

There is clark five gear transmission used
in the f-600 hooked to an ft motor(HD, but similer to Fe's). The
bell housing from the clark also has to be
used also. I do not know every detail on the
swap but Ive posted about this before to
find out that the fifth gear is not an over drive.
After that I lost interest.

I installed a NV 4500 out of a Dodge in my 72 F-250 4x4 behind a 428. I bought a kit from Advance adapters and bolted the tranny to the FE bell housing. Used a clutch disc out of an IHC truck and had to build a new rear crossmember. It wasn't easy but it sure works good. Love that 5th over.

No. The FE has a unique bellhousing pattern, so you need a FE-specific bellhousing or an adapter.

You can get a bell to put a Tremec TKO on your FE. That's the way that a lot of the Cobra replica guys go.

From what I've been reading on here 390s and 460s are both FE are they not? I could be wrong though..

Would the bell housing from 5 speed out of a late model mustang or F-150 bolt up to an old 302 from a '72?

The 460 is not a FE. The FE series includes the 352, 360, 390, 410, 427 and 428. FE's were installed in cars from about 1958 to 1970 or so, and continued to be used in trucks through 1976. The FE engines have been out of production since 1976.

The 460 is a "385" series engine, along with its little brother, the 429. They have different bellhousing bolt patterns, so a 429/460 bell will not fit on a FE and vice versa.

Ok thanks for the enlightenment. Looks like my idea may be more of a dream (as well as work and expense) than I thought. Might have to check out adapters...

Jay, the tranny you need is a 5 speed Clark 285 series. You'll need the bell, clutch and flywheeel too. Look for Clarks behind 361 and 391 FT engines in F450s or bigger, as late as 1979. If you have a divorced T-case, I don't think it will be as hard as you might fear. DF

Thanks for the info Dinosaurfan! How much do you know about those trannys? Are they an overdrive unit? How do they shift? I just like the way the newer 5 speeds shift, and the ratios in them seem quite a bit more flexible than the 4 speed in my old girl though that may be my rear end ratios too.
Thanks

Jay, there is supposedly an overdrive version of this tranny available, but I never found one in several years of looking. The regular 285s, however seem fairly common. The thing I don't like about the NP435 is the 6.69/3.50/1.67/1.00 gear spread. This spread gives too much rpm drop/rise between gears. The Clarks usually have 6.99/4.09/2.24/1.47/1.00, which seems very pickup truck friendly. If you want to reduce rpm on the freeway, run taller tires. The 6.99 first will still give you plenty of pulling power if you need it. Is your Transfer case married or divorced ? DF

DF-you're right about the clark being available with the OD. I have some original shop manuals for my truck and it says so but i havent been able to find the ratios in there:-( My transfer case is divorced so that should make things a little easier. And I agree about the ratio spread on the 435

Thanks
