I know everybody looks for a 73-79 donor for the disc brake swap. But what's wrong with swapping over the disc brakes from 68-72 like those found on 250s and Camper Specials? Wouldn't they be the same as the newer units?
Also, there was a post earlier about using Lincoln rear disc brakes as a bolt on for the rear. Would this require a special proportioning valve? Any other problems with this mod?
the lincoln swap mention earlier is not as straight forward as the post made it sound. the lincoln has a smaller bolt pattern (but bigger than other ford cars!) that won't work with 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. unfortunately the rotor can not be redrilled and used on a truck axle as the axle will not fit into the back of the rotor unless you turn it down and then the studs will be right at the edge (not good). the only option would be to use the 5 on 5 bolt pattern that a lincoln has and either use adapters or GM wheels. i guess that is the reason these rear ends are so common in junkyards, they are about as useless as anything. as a side note i even thought about just using the caliper bracket and caliper and finding another rotor but the caliper actually hits the end of the axle when mounted on a stock truck axle. been there done that, wasn't really worth the effort. hawkrod
The lincoln rear disc conversion is not a direct bolt on, however with a little work it can be done. I used front rotors from a mid eighties f-150 4x4 and minor machining and it bolted onThe rotors maintain the correct bolt pattern of 5 on 5-1/2 bhc. Let me know and I will outline for you if you are still interested.
I am putting together instructions and pics that outline this swap for a couple of people on the site. It has been several years since I did mine so... I don't have pics readily available in a step by step format. I am also going by memory so I don't want to leave anything out. If someone has a set of the lincoln caliper brackets loose and send me some close pics it would help out a lot. My truck is together and it would require disassembly to show all the details. In the meantime I will sketch a few drawings. Kevin
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Nov-02 AT 06:41 PM (EST)]would a picture of the caliper brackets still on the axle work? i still have the axles and parts here from my ill-fated swap. problem is you have to remove the wheel bearings to get the brackets off. hawkrod
Brett, the 250 set up has eight lugs as opposed to five for the 1/2 ton. Unless you really want to beef up your suspension to use the eight lug setup, wait and find a 73-79 F100/150 donor truck.
