How can I fix a leak that is coming out of the the base of the dipstick? Its not the big nut that it sits in on the pan? That is tight. Is there a way to pull the tube out and seal it up? I tryed giving a tug on it and it wouldn't come out. I am leaving on thursday morning to goto the races in Ft Worth and hope to get her to stop leaking by then.
That could turn into a real nightmare. The big nut holds a sleeve that is also has a nut threaded on the inside of the pan. If you take it apart be sure you don't let it fall down in the pan.
Personally, if it's a minor leak and everything is still tight, I'd clean it up really well and run a bead of silicon around it. May not work for very long, but it's better than spending a week trying to fish a nut out of the bttom of the oil pan.

Cookie is 100% right!!!!!!!!! I am running around with a big rubber plug in the side of my pan because I made this mistake. If you are going to play with it at all, make sure you do not remove the top dipstick support bracket without first making sure that the bottom flange can not fall into the pan. As soon as I loosened the top bracket and wiggled the stick my flange fell into the pan. I spent many hours trying to fish it out. Finally had to put it back together with a boat plug with a bolt in the middle that swells the rubber plug as you tighten the bolt. You have to pull the engine to pull the pan, theoretically. I have been waiting and getting ready. I am going to do everything at once. I bought a downpipe and exhaust. I bought a 2" body lift. I bought a back-up turbo and a new compressor wheel and a seal kit. In the next couple of weeks it is going to be on the concrete and I am going to do what I have to do to get the pan down far enough to get the fitting out. I am hoping with the body lift and the turbo off I can get it up 5" and get my hand in there or better yet get the pan off and clean everything and put it back together with the new downpipe and exhaust.
If you are going to mess with it I would tape a little piece of wire onto the pipe stub or clamp it very gently with a little pair of needle nosed vice grips. Very GENTLY. Or have someone down below holding it while you mess with the bracket up top. The o-ring is on the inside of the pan anyway, though. Not much you can do unless you get a new nut. When you get a new nut you will see that the threads on the inside of the old nut are buggered up. It is softer metal than the flange and the threads wear down and strip out on the nut. So if you want to do something, get a new nut. Very carefully take the old one off, while making certain that the flange does not fall into the pan. Then clean around the flange on side of pan with like gas or brake kleen, put a little silicone around the threads and the pan and put the new nut on. You don't have to tighten the nut too much. It might be best too if you get that gray sealing stuff from Ford. Then you will be done with it and it should not leak or come back off unless you want it to.

big red letters are what your after. you don't need to worry about any of the stuff above if its just the o-ring at the end of the tube. just unbolt the top of the dip stick and pull it out. get a new o-ring and replace it. that simple!
Yes its coming out where the tube slides in. But I tried to pull the tube out and it moved just a little bit. It felt like it was in there pretty solid. Should I just pull like hell on it and see if it pops out and then all I would need is a o-ring? Thanks for the help guys!! I have to replace the water pump in the 5er right now so I'll check back in after I am done with that.
Went to go get an o-ring and they dont have any on the shelf, I have to wait till tomarrow. If I pull the dipstick out will anything fall into the pan?
not as long as you don't unscrew the big nut that is right against the pan. chances are that its a standard o-ring so you could pull it an got to any parts store and get one as long as you have the old one to reference against
