I am looking for an onboard air compressor, 12v powered. I used to have a belt drive on my 94 F250, but that won't work on the new rig. Would like at least 2cfm and 100 psi, and I will have at least a five gallon tank bolted to the frame.
I am not interested in the portables that plug into the lighter socket.
You really want to come armed for bear. That's a big compressor. You'll have to shop around for the best price. You're probably going to end up paying around $350-$400 for it. Great units though. I've had a VIAIR 100 in my little rockcrawler for years and the darn thing's bulletproof.
I need to air up tires on the farm, most of which are tires on center pivot irrgation machines. I have 5 of the pivots, each have 20 tires, all the machines are over 25 years old, so most of the tires are weather checked and very abused, the tires are all 14.9/24 tractor tires. Takes at least a 5 gallon bottle to fill. I do have a 13hp compressor with 30 tank, I don't like to pack it with me full time though, without packing this full time during farming season I would need to make extra trips or have an adaquate onboard compressor.
I appreciate your comments and reccomendations on the viair.
I have a 12VDC Puma DC5000 compressor on my truck, and pumps just as fast as the Viair 550C, is more durable, and can be gotten very cheap through eBay. $200 for a complete system with tank, pressure switch, etc. See item eBay item 7616008581.
My DC5000 is mounted on my truck fully outdoors (in the bed), and it's been running like a champ for 18 months now, and I run it all year round to 165 psi. It's a brute!
The junkyard approach could be to drive a York A/C compressor off a small starter (or winch) motor. You don't need a tank to fill tires, just use an air chuck without a check valve. Mount a switch to control the motor solenoid near the chuck so you just run the motor when you're ready to fill a tire.
