Had my truck up at the tire place this morning having a tire repaired and I noticed coolant dripping from under the engine. It was coming from about the center line of the engine from left to right, and just slightly behind the center line of the tire from front to rear. As I was driving up there this morning, I also noticed coolant in the floorboard on the pax side. That sounds like a heater core to me, right? Question is, will a leaking heater core cause a coolant leak under the engine compartment like that as well as on the inside? This is my main concern, I just had a shop do a valve job for me and, of course, both head gaskets and intake manifold gaskets were replaced. I'm concerned that it might be one of those gaskets leaking, although the truck is running fine, I wouldn't want to wait too long before I take it back to them. If it's just the heater core, I can do that on a weekend. It's a pretty steady drip. What do you think, heater core or head/intake gasket? Thanks.
act stupid and take it back to the shop that did the work and tell them you think the head gasket might be leaking coolant. (don't tell 'em yet about the floorboard). let them diagnose it for you.
I'll probably take it back to them anyway just to let them check it out. I'm almost positive that I've got a bad heater core (leaking on the floorboard, windshield steaming up, etc. What I was really wondering, however, is could a bad heater core cause a leak to come from underneath the engine as well as inside the cab, i.e., how could it make it's way to the outside and come almost from directly underneath the engine? I didn't see any evidence of a leak where the heater hoses connect.
If it was not there before the head gasket job, sounds like the shop needs to take care of you. Can you see your freeze plugs? One may be corroded and leaking.
No, I couldn't get a good enough look at them. I'm going to take it back up Monday and have them put it on the rack to check it out. I've never seen a coolant leak in this particular area that wasn't coming from the heads/freeze plugs or someplace like that. I think the A/C drain is more off to the side than the center. I bet I've probably got two leaks, heater core and a bad head/intake gasket/freeze plug. Dang, always something. Thanks guys.
