Several years ago an entire weekend was spent preparing my garage floor for painting. Followed all the recommendations, scoured it with TPS, rinsed and re-applied another washing to get it really clean. Painted it with a special expoxy expressly for concrete. Result. A to-die-for gorgeous grey floor. Only one problem. Every time a car was parked on it the paint would bond to the tire and rip off perfect tread imprints. Needless to say, after a month, it looked worse than before. Anyone else have any experience with painting a garage floor with favorable results?
I work for sherwin-williams and you need to let that epoxy sit for at least 2-3 weeks before putting anything like a car onto it. If it is a good epoxy, then the instructions will say to sit for a certain period of time before putting something heavy on it.
This brings back a memory (for what it may be worth)
In 1985 I was at a school on North Island California (San Diego area).
There was a helicopter hanger I periodically had to help clean up, because the floor (deck) was painted WHITE so that any leaks whatsoever would show up like a fly on a window pane...
You could also tell immediately if it was oil or hydraulic fluid!
I imagine it would show the green of radiator coolant equally well, but helo's are not cooled that way...
Thanks to all for the tips. Looks like the impatience of youth was the original downfall. Let's see, 2-3 days prep, 72 hr to dry, 2-3 weeks to cure, then sealant......hmmmmm, I could be back in the garage around Easter if I hurry. On second thought, I seem to remember bustin' my butt several times coming in with snow covered boots on that slick surface.
In my garage, I allowed 6 weeks for curing the concrete,
then I used a Siikens product, which is basically a two
part plastic sealant, it really works well, but has a
tendancy to chip if you drop something really heavy
onto it, the benifit is, it's just about everything proof,
we used it at work for our battery charging area, I'll
take some Photo's, and post them soon...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Mar-02 AT 04:04 AM (EST)]Busting your but... One of the hazards of a painted floor or one that was very well finished like mine. When you go to the paint store, whether you use epoxy or dedicated floor paint, ask for some texturing agent to mix with the paint. I can't remember the name, but most paint stores should have someone who knows about it. I have thought about painting mine just FOR the traction enhancement. It doesn't take a whole lot of texturing agent to make a difference. You aren't making 40 or 80 grit, more like 2 grit.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Mar-02 AT 06:20 AM (EST)]In my personal garage I went with the indusrial tile (black and white) it held up great,(no longer own the house, but the ex tells me its still nice ) of course I wasnt swinging jacks around on the floor or doing any hard core stuff in there either.
We painted our shop floor and even did the logo in the middle, I think there still is a border left around the walls, everything else wore off a long time ago!! One of these days when we got nothing to do, maybe try it again.
I also save a lot of things off this board and others. I have a couple of text files that I keep that started as one, way back in 1983, one (home) and one (hobby). I copy ideas from the internet, or type in info from magazines/books into the appropriate file. I use an ordinary text base editor (not a slow word processor or database) to open and edit the files. The text search function finds stuff a lot faster than a database, and I do not have to index or use data fields. I can write what I want, in any form I want. I just click on an Icon on the corner of my desktop!
The editor I use now is: NoteTab Light (freeware)by Eric G.V, Fookes, the website is: www.notetab.com I am considering upgrading to the pro version. Best text editor I have ever found whether you need simple or complex, it does it all. Give it a try!
Wow, tile floor in the garage that's cool. Sure hate park my project car on that floor. I'm going to finish my floor someday but I need a finish that will hold up to normal garage/shop equipment like jack stands, heavy duty hydraulic floor jacks, fluid spills, oil drips and welding sparks. I was informed that a concrete stain would better suite my needs but after reading "Graywolf's" posting I like the idea of a white floor.
Graywolf, would that white hanger floor you used to keep so clean happen to be located at 29 Palms or the MCRD? One of my friends was stationed out there in the Marine Corp Air Wing.
