ford amplifier bypass?

I have a '96 Bronco with the premium sound system and want to put an aftermarket cd player in. I got the amplifier bypass harness so I can use the built in amp from the cd player. The directions say to unplug the input/output from the amp and plug in the bypass plug. I plugged in the plug from the input but the only output would be the little square plug I pulled from the back of the factory cd player. The other side of the bypass plug doesn't match the little square plug, also I have another harness it came with which plugs into the factory cd player plug and makes a pigtail to hook up the aftermarket cd player it has the little square plug for the factory amp. So do I have the wrong bypass plug or am I just an idiot? Oh if it helps its a metra part # 70-5514

I went to the stereo shop and talked to the install guy and he said don't use the bypass, just hook up the harness and the factory amp plug to the cd player and hook up the blue amp wire on the harness. I did that and it works but am curious if my speakers are being amplified but the factory amp, the amp in the cd player, or both.

The way your install shop is describing is that they are powering the factory amplifier and using it to run your speakers.

The bypass should be a no-brainer. The amp should have matching plugs that allow you to unplug it and plug them into your bypass harness. If this is not the case then you will have to hardwire past the amplifier.

Here's some wiring info I could find. These wires for the speakers should match up on the output side of the amplifier.

I like the radio amplifier personally. You get the great sound that is actually coming from the radio and not filtered through the factory amplifier which gives you the same sound you had before. If you like the way your audio sounds but wish to just have more features then keeping the amp is fine.

I see you're in Kansas City. Feel free to hit me up. My number is on the website.
