I got a 302 out of a 85 Mustang being rebuilt to put in my 83 F-100. I will be swapping the intake, timing chain cover, harmonic balancer, oil pan (The stang had a double sump) and flywheel from the 83 to the 85.
Most of these will swap no problem. The question is, the flywheel has weights on it. How will I know which way to position the weights when I bolt it up or does it matter?
Also gonna replace front tranny seal and replace the fluid in torque converter. Does the converter have a drain bolt in it?
What fordxxx said...it only goes one way. Since it's an automatic transmission, it's actually called a flexplate rather than a flywheel. Set it in place on the crank and turn it while looking through the holes, you'll only find one position where all six holes line up.
You may or may not have a drain plug. If not, and you have the converter out for the swap anyway about the best way to drain it is to pour the old fluid right out of the snout in the center into a pan or suitable container, preferably one strong enough to support the weight of the converter so you can let it drain for a while without having to hold it. This generally won't get all of it out, but should get most of it.
Cool, thats good to know. I've been through a couple of Chevy engines and this is my first Ford rebuild.
I'm going to pick up my block tomorrow. Its done with the cylinders bored 30 over, the crank 10 10 and I have the rebuild kit with correct pistons and bearings. Gonna put it together this weekend, (YES I'm gonna use the plastigage and check the ring clearances) but the heads still need to go to the machine shop and have them checked out.
Try Summit for some new cheapies. Me, I like to scrounge for used stuff when I can. But for new cheap headers, don't expect a great fit or long header life. They'd just be sort of temporary till something better comes along.
Yea, Summit is where I got the rebuild kit. I'm on a very tight budget so the headers, the MSD ignition and a good intake manifold I'm wanting will just have to wait a little.
