I've got an 05 Lariat with Towcommand and last fall hauled our 38' 15,000# boat back from Valdez 360miles to Fairbanks. On the way back, the dash kept flashing "trailer disconnected" and it seemed the trailer brakes were not working at all. We limped her home at 45mph and got her into storage for the winter and are tackling the problem now preparing for the haul back down for summer fishing fun.
We called the trailer manufacturer and they said that the TowCommand system uses a different sine wave and will not work with this trailer. It's a triple axle roadrunner trailer. So, they are sending a new actuator as well as a new trailer brake controller to use. When purchasing this truck, I opted for the TowCommand for the very reason of not having a controller hanging down to knock my knees on.
I have heard of a few people having problems. Mostly the people who have had problems were people with hydraulic assisted electric brakes for their trailers. The system was made specific for electric. I ran into the same problem (disconnected trailer) 1 time. I put a little vaseline (had no dielectric grease) on the pins of the connector as a conducting agent and have had no problems since. Good luck
1. "It's a different sine wave." - Bull. They don't have an answer so they're making something up. Next time they tell you that, ask them where the AC is coming from. Fools.
2. I believe someone mentioned a box that went inline and added enough resistor across the brake line to cure the "trailer disconnected" issue. I don't recall any more about it, though... maybe check with some other trailering places?
If the manufacturer is sending components to make it work properly i would use it. If for some reason you didnt have the brakes working and you blew a tire and the trailer flipped and took out that bus load of nuns you would be at fault. But if the manufacturer knows about the problem and sends out whats needed to fix the problem then it wouldnt necessarily be your fault. Ide do what the manufacturer recommends so you wont be caught up in legal battles is the worse happends.
It sure is a bummer that its not compatiable without having to install other components.
