99 F250 SD Diesel. Earlier this week, 'service engine' light came on and engine would run very rough and without much power. Light would randomly turn off and everything would immediately go back to normal. In past few days, light is on constantly. Very rough at low RPMs. Shakes entire truck. Very little power. Seems to smooth out at higher speeds/RPMs. I replaced the cam position sensor yesterday thinking that was it. Nope. Maybe an O2 sensor? I'm at a loss. Any wisdom would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
You need to read the error codes and find out what is going on. You could start replacing parts until your bank account runs out and not stumble across the fix.
Good idea. I didn't know they did that. I found out the hard way not to buy parts from them when I rebuilt my CJ7. I replaced the CMP because another buddy with a PSD had the same probs and that sensor was his problem. Another $150 mistake..! Thanks again.
No, buying a CPS is NOT a mistake - unless you trashed the one you took out. The CPS in PSDs are notorious for dying. What a lot of people do is keep a spare CPS and a 10mm wrench in their glove box for the day when the CPS quits.
You didn't waste your money, you made an investment!
O2 sensor? On a diesel? If so, your's is the first diesel in history to have an O2 sensor!
Since you're at a loss, maybe you need to take it to someone that knows how to diagnose what's wrong. It may even be cheaper than just buying parts at random, hoping to stumble on what's wrong.
I went through a fit just like that with mine. I pulled the codes and they kept saying the CPS. If you get that when you read the codes you may have a bad ECU. I replaced mine and have had no trouble since. But don't just go and buy one cause I said so. I am not a mechanic by any means.
Mine is doing the same thing intermittently. I pulled the codes and got a cyl 1 injector ckt low. I read up on here, that I could have a short under the vavle covers. I haven't been able to check yet, but will when i slow down. Let us know what you find out.
I went by the Autozone today and they found no codes. Go figure. I'm going to check under valve cover this weekend. I searched some old threads and saw this is a potential problem area. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks.
Then either Autozone has a poor scanner or they don't know how to use it. Either one is very possible.
Any time a code is stored in memory it will stay in memory for about a month after the last time the light was on. If a code doesn't show up, it is almost always either operator error or a poor scan tool.
Having a scanner and knowing how to use it are two different things. I just bought the Autoenginuity Ford package for my laptop. Don't ask me yet how to use it. It is installed and I've played with it a little, but I don't yet know how to get usable answers. Give me a little time...
if the cel came on a coode will be there forever till it is cleared by the scanner or by unhooking the battery. i would spend the money to have it scanned by a mechanic and then go from there. you are correct that it is probably and UVC harness issue or related but get it scanned and post your codes and we can help you.
I went to a second Autozone today for a computer check. Same thing. All passed. The guy argued with me that the service engine light couldn't be on. So we started it up. Ooops, on comes the light along with the buckin' bronco smooth idle. "Must not be the computer" he says. Well, I'm going to my mechanic on Monday to let him plug it in to something better that can hopefully give me some guidance. In the meantime, I'm going to peak under the valve covers tomorrow....Saga continues....At least it gives me something to do!
