I just bought a 71 F-100 engine covered in grime. Once I clean it all off how can I tell if it's 302,351,390 etc? It has a 3-spd tranny, was on tree now through floor.
Previous owner didn't know anything, he bought it but never did anything to it...
Also, interested in changing 4-corner drums to disc's, adding power to them and the steering too.
If anyone could point me in the right direction as far as tech article's, mag's, companies. It would be greatly appreciated
If it really was from a 71 F100, it is either a 302 (small block), 360 or 390 (both FE big blocks). You can tell the small block from the FE's by counting the valve cover bolts. The FE's have five bolts holding each valve cover down, and the 302 will have six on each. The 360 and 390 are externally identical. If you have a FE, you'll need to measure the stroke or inspect the crankshaft in order to tell whether it is a 360 or a 390.
Well, I got some info about the brake convert...Can't find any of those parts here, even the dealer can't get them/doesn't have them. I am wondering about the custom subframe's I see advertised in Classic Truck. I.E. the Mustang II stuff, will it work on thses trucks? I feel in the long run the cost will be worth it as the front drums go for 90 each with the rear's at 56 and a 4 day wait...
Re your brake question. There is a good tech writeup in the tech article section of this site (way down the list). It gives you a good idea what you need for a disk brake swap in the front and how to do it.
I counted 6 bolts on each cover so that means it's a 302 right? Also there is a lot of space left in the bay so it's definetly not a big block, from the front I can see all the way to the trans bellhousing.
I really hoped it would be a big block.
Anyway I bought a custom classic truck mag that seems to have more stuff. Maybe the classic truck mag is for people who want to keep it original, whereas I must do some mod's.
Anyone have a good lead on a complete wiring harness? This truck's wire's are so chopped and jumbled it might be better to just swap the whole thing out.
Don't cry!
You can do a nice build up on a 302. After all, they are quite popular in Mustangs. It might not develop the torque of a 390, but for a daily driver it'll serve you well.
Welcome to FTE!
I have recieved alot of catalog's in the mail, wow there's a great deal of parts for this truck. One thing though, there were no badges on the truck to identify it as a ranger, custom, whatever. How can I tell the difference by looking at it?
Good rule of thumb (bearing in mind that all rules have exceptions) is if no badges it was a standard cab. Or it could be one of the "Badged" models that has been shaved. enjoy your "late model" truck. Trevor the CACWBY in WI (who thinks slammed and shaved sixty sevens rock)
