?? Looking at a Blown 347 compared to a 390FE motor in my 1954 F-100. If the truck had each engine run down the track, which would perform better? Only interested in racing the truck, and street rodding.
The 91 Stang in your signature is obviously blown, so you know the answer to your question. Is the 390 stock? If so, this isn't even going to be close. You can make a 2.3L Pinto engine faster than a naturally aspirated 390 if no technology or budget constraints are placed on the comparison.
ok. let me be clearer. if the 390 was built it still seems that the 302 based motor will outpeform it, using similar budgets. i say this because the stock motors are similar in horsepower. am i wrong or right. please correct me if i am. racewise. maybe not from a torque aspect but like I said b4. in the quarter it seems that it would.

Hard to compare. You can build an FE into one heck of a beast with the right heads, stroking it out, etc
I have heard of twin turboed FE's even... and top of the line Eleanors run a blower..
But I bet the horsepower costs you dear compared to a smallblock. Speed parts are much more common for them.. so I'd say dollar for dollar the Windsor is gonna make more horses
great, then we are on the same page. i am thinking a blown 351, ported heads and so on will get me in the 12's. possible? and what about the swap from the current 390 to a small block? would i need to use a c4 instead of the current c6??? or find a race type aod??
what is the difference between a c4 and a c6? would one be better for my application?
C6 is much heavier.. a bad thing for a drag car. But it would take some serious upgrading to get a C4 ready for duty behind a 500+ HP 347. And back to your original question. I'm with Ringo. You'll need a fat wallet to get a 390 to put out the performance of a blown 347. SB parts are WAY cheaper. As you are probably aware though, your 347 will be well into the "split the block" power level zone. An FE may not be IMO.
C4's are relatively bullet proof if you rebuild them using good components. I've got a friend running close to 700hp through one with no problems.
As for the 1/4 mile ET's. You can get into the 12's with as little as 300hp if you set your truck up right. I've got a '84 Mustang with a 351 crate motor (380hp) and a 5 speed and I run high 12's all day long and that is with suspension set up for autocross and street tires. It would drop even more if it was set up for drag racing. With a good set of sticky meats, a well tuned suspension, and a high stall converter in your C4 you can pull of some really good times with modest horsepower.
