I have found that hot tanking does a good job on grease, but not so good on mineral deposits inside the water jacket.

Well I dropped off the engine tonight at the machine shop to have the block hot tanked, cylinders bored out 0.030" over, cam bearings installed, and pistons pressed onto the rods. I asked the shop owner what he thought might have caused the crank to wear a 1/8" groove where the thrust bearing rides on the back side of the crank. He first asked if the truck was an automatic or manual transmission. His thinking here was it could of been caused by a heavy duty clutch. I told him my truck had an automatic and he said that the torque converter may have caused this problem. He said that when a truck is driven hard or is often over loaded that the torque converter can "balloon" or expand outward causing the wear I found on the backside of the thrustbearing and crank surface. The PO told me he often had over loaded the truck many times he says it currently has a broken leaf spring in the back that I have not yet looked into yet. So in order not to do the same damage to my newly rebuilt 302 w/ a C4 tranny I need to buy a new torque converter. Anyone have any suggestions for a good torque converter for my application. I am not building a race truck here, but a stout work truck. I will be running a Holley 4bbl 600cfm carb, Weiand low-rise dual plane intake, headers, rv-style cam. Thanks.

A stock converter should be fine. You don't need a higher stall speed or anything like that. I'm not much into automatics, I'd go talk to your local tranny shop, he may be able to sell you one right off the shelf.

I finally took some pictures of the crank in my 302 that has the 1/8" groove cut into it from the thrust bearing flange. Check out the pics:

Ouch, that's gotta hurt! I've never seen one grooved so deeply.
