radius arm bushing replacement

Just got my new brackets from ford ($55.00) for both. And bought aftermarket bushings. Now I have one question. I saw a write-up on how to do this and to use Grade 8 hardware. I bought coarse thread, should I have got fine thread? The write-up did not specify. Also, the write-up said to use 1 1/2" inch bolts. They seem alittle long to me so I got 1 1/4".Also, I did not get a new heat shield, should I get one for the right side and do they rally resist that much heat? thanks

Correct me if I am wrong, but the coarse thread should be fine. As for the heat shield, if you still have the one that was on there, just re-use that. If the stock one is missing, it would probably be best to get a heat shield, since the bushings do wear out faster because of the exhaust.

Just curious, why did you have to replace the brackets? Mine were rusty, however they still seem to work fine. Was it due to adding a lift kit?

The only reason I would replace them is if they were WAY TOO rusted. They aint all that much money, so if they are down to where then metal is thin as a paper towel and flapping around in the wind......replace them.

I hope that the bushings do not bust through because one was starting to thin out around the hole. What will happen if tie radius arm busts through? I am afraid the answer will not be good.

The front axle will get pushed backwards when you go over bumps.

radius arm bushings

My right bracket its shot! The lip for the bushing is starting to rot away and the teflon ring is crack and the front rubber is almost ripped to shreds where it enters the hole.I did not look into the noise I heard soon enough and this is what it was. I had just done an exhaust and brake job not long before this noise started and thought the exhaust was loose or something. The left bracket is rusty so I just ordered it too. I started to knock the rivets off tonight. Got the two bottom ones off and will get the third tommorrow.I w3as going to burn them off but I got alittle nervous when the rubber got hot enough to catch on fire when I was heating the lower rivets. I had a 89' bronco with 195,000 miles on it and I never had to replace these bushings!! This one has 114,00 mi. on it. I'm surprised how rusty the brackets are for a 93.The vehicle was well kept.Even the radius arms have some deep rust pitting on them.

Not so much when you go over the bumps, but the real stress is when you hit the brakes. The front brakes will cause the TTB to want to move to the rear..........
