smallblock351, I was looking at the shorty headers you posted the link for and they show the application to be for 1987 to 1996 302 V8's. I have a 1977 302, which will be sporting a pair 1990 E7TE heads when I finish the rebuild. Will these headers fit my application? I would think that I would have less things to get in the way of the headers in my 1977 F150 2-wd truck then in the later years that they say these headers fit.
the nice thing about the shortys is that they clear everything nicely. i know the years they say like 87 - 90 something didnt catch the finall year. ive put them on them and also put those same ones on 80 - 86. They have always cleared everything with ease and i would think it would be the same on a 78 theres lots of room under a truck and especialy 2 wheel drive. Plus the shortys clear better then long tube. my experience with shorty headers even goes as far as putting ones listed for a mustang and installing them on a truck and they cleared. the difference was it dropped over the 4 wheel drive drive shaft. Wasnt a problem for me in that respect though since my dad bends custom exhaust.
Hope im helping and not causing more confusion but i really feel shorty headers will clear and work very well.
I just installed summit longtube headers on my 73 F100 2WD. The S-bends are not too bad to do. I work in a shop so I did my own exhaust. The pass. side S-bend was a bit more then driverside, but any exhaust shop should be able to do it.
73f100shortbed, On my truck with the front gas tank that runs along the inside DS frame rail, I would think the DS would be the real problem. Another guy here with the same setup said he ended up dumping both exhaust pipes ahead of the PS rear wheel.

Yeah you'd need to run both pipes down pass side but then can put duals straight out back if you want i think
Well they don't hang as low as I thought, I can't just run a pipe under the crossmember, I still have to put an S-bend. I should have said that they hang lower than the Heddmans on my 77 F-150. I have never had a problem hanging my exhaust up on stuff yet, but I agree with the what Kemicalburns say's. I'm going to take her to the shop and see what they can do about routing it above the crossmember and keep'N tucked up.
The shorty header seems to be a good Idea, Do they list any for 4x4's or just mustangs and cars?
.Thanx guys.
they list them for 4x4 they fit 2 wd and 4 wd same set actualy. on the secound page i posted a link for a bbk very good set and a cheaper set by summit.
That exhaust pipe/cross member interference is not that big an issue. I have added some pics to my gallery of the cross member that I fabbed up using rectangular and square tubing. Total cost was about $20 and I had it done in an afternoon. OK maybe I should have painted it.
As you can see the exhaust pipe goes straight over the cross member with and inch to spare.
I run duals (3" pipe, from the long tube headers to the tips) out the passenger side, in front of the tire, and the trans crossmember isn't a problem. I installed an identical system on an 02 F-150 and it worked well too. However, I must add that both trucks are 2wd. My brother (water5) will be coming down here in a couple of weeks and I'll have a chance to plan out a 4x4 version of my setup.
Also, ground clearance isn't going to be an issue at all unless you plan on stump jumping or rock crawling.
And for the headers, I've installed several different kinds on both GM and Ford, and I have some advice. If you buy the less expensive (painted) kind, I would recommend stripping the paint off of those and shooting them with some type of high temp header paint. The paint that most of those headers come with isn't worth a flip and will burn off within a couple hundred miles, leaving exposed bare metal on the primaries.
If you have the extra $$ to put down then the ceramic coated units will last a good while....just dont do anythng to knick/chip the coating on them.
