Tuners
1) easy to install. No fuss, no muss, no cleaning off electrical contacts, and no limbo-practice while trying to get to parts under the dash.
2) most have multiple programs, you get to choose which you like.
3) Most have trans tuning to help your tranny handle the extra power better.
3) Most read trouble codes so you can diagnose many problems without a$$i$tance from the $tealer$hip.
Problems with the tuner:
1) they cost almost as much as a GOOD multi-position chip (I have a DP TUner chip by Jody Tipton)
2) Their tuning is generic and often doesn't work well in particular applications - I used an Edge Evo. It was okay in the 60hp mode, but had extreme EGT problems and billowed black smoke in the upper two positions - 80 and 100hp.
3) shifting sucked - and the TC would unlock if I just backed off the throttle.
4) it takes 5 minutes or so to change tuning
5) They will read codes, but most are kind of limited.
My solution cost a lot more, but works a lot better.
1) A Jody Tipton chip. More power, lower EGT, very little smoke, excellent trans tuniing, change tuning on the fly. Runs better, too. Get to warm up in a mild tune, then switch up after the engine is warm.
2) Autoenginuity Scan Tool with Ford enhancement to read codes and much, much more. Just got it, haven't used it yet.
