A mechanic friend that works at the local dealership heard my truck idle the other day and heard the T/C rattling. He refered to it as a time bomb waiting to explode. I have searched and found several threads on the 99 rattles. I didn't find any that stated a need to replace it. His thinking is I need to replace it before it "blows up and messes the trans. up" I do quite a lot of towing, 4k boat, 10k camper. I never paid much attention to the rattles until he pointed it out. I trust you guys opinion more than his. So what do I need to do? I have 114,000 miles and need a bunch more. Of course he made the statement in front of my wife and now she is back on the new truck kick.
From what I have gathered here, it is just 99's have a problem with the T/C rattling. I know mine is rattling some. I also thought I could drive it forever. Now I worried about it causing more trans. problems if it does fail.
My brother has two 99 PSDs (plus a 97, plus a PSD Excursion, plus an E350 PSD, plus his 16-year old daughter's 01 PSD). Both 99s lost their flex plates. I don't know if they rattled before hand, but the flex plates broke and made DEATH RATTLE noises. He had to replace them.
I have a 2000. So far, no flex plate problem. If I have to replace a flex plate, I hope I have enough money to replace the TC with one that has a much lower stall speed. If not, well, then not.
Most of the time I have heard a rattle from the t/c, the bolts are just loose. Catch it before it tears the flex plate up. I feel you can still get some service out of your trans if you catch it now.

Thanks for your replies,
The mech. I talked to suggested using a T/C for a 2001 or 2002. Allthough I am not a mech. I try most stuff myself and will do this if I can get my back working right again. If this is a problem I need fixed soon, I am willing to pay this mech to fix it now. I am using the truck everyday and pulling trailers most weekends. What do you think?
The 99 T/C's had weak springs. Mine rattled too. As far as I know it won't hurt anything. Any T/C you buy now will have stiffer springs and won't rattle. Rebuilt one cost me like $250 - $300. Took like half a day to put it in. Pretty easy.
Guess I will chance it for a while until I can afford to replace it. $$$ a little tight right now. Will welcome any suggestion as to the most cost wise repair.
How do you know if its rattling? My 99 rattles so much at idle I could not hear a jet taking off. Maybe thats a clue? Really do you climb under the truck and listen?
This was a low mileage rig when I got it last year. It only has 40K on it now. I just bought a Toy Hauler loaded will be about 9 to 10,0000lbs.
I have drove the truck since it was new. I'm with you on hearing any rattling. I guess I got use to it and did'nt notice it. The guy that noticed it drives a 2001 PSD. He is a ford mech. that use to work at the local stealership and now works for the county. He noticed it as soon as he heard it. Now that he has called my attention to it, I do hear it. Sounds like something rolling around inside the T/C . Or like bolts in a tin can. Maybe it's not that bad, just knowing that someone else hears it and something might be wrong with my truck, worries me.
