won't down shift out of overdrive 2001 ranger edge
I have a a problem with the overdrive switch on the shift lever. It won't disengage the overdrive. The light does not come on when I try to disengage it and it doesn't down shift out of overdrive. Any help would be appreciated.

I thought I would post this just to be helpful. I just got done diagnosing a problem with the fuse #2 circuit (in the main fuse box or MJB according to the shop manual) on my 2001 Ranger. The 10A fuse would keep blowing out when the shift lever was shifted into DRIVE and wiggled a bit. It seems that the fuse #2 on a 2001 Ford Ranger supplies power to the Overdrive Button at the end of the shift lever that is used to turn the overdrive off. When I unplugged the Overdrive button, fuse #2 would no longer blow out when the shift lever was wiggled in DRIVE. I also used a DMM to check to see if the Overdrive switch was shorting to ground when the shift lever was wiggled in DRIVE and sure enough there was a short. I would suspect that there is most likely some damage to the power wire running to the Overdrive switch that is causing it to short to ground. The wire may be rubbing some grounded metal at the end of the shift lever or something.
So for now, the Overdrive Button at the end of the shift lever is disconnected until I can pull the shrouding around the steering column off to fix it.
Hope this helps.
