just want some input i have 99 f350 4x4 crew cab w/ automatic tranny when towing most of the time with overdrive off my rpm range seems to run pretty high about 65 mph is 2600 rpm and it red lines at 3400 or so so my question is how high should i let the rpms go before i get concerned .
p.s. all temps stay fine
What engine do you have? RPM depends on engine, your redline sounds like a diesel.
Keep the tranny in OD unless it hunts gears. In general on a gasser, don't know diesel, redline will be a bit higher than the RPM where you don't really get much more power.
My 460 engine redlines somewhere around 5,000 or so? It doesn't really make any more power above about 4,000RPM just more thrashing noises from under the hood.
If you had to run near redline for prolonged periods I would just keep it where the engine still was making decent power. I would also keep an eye on guages and make sure the engine isn't making any funny noises.
Your RPM sounds right on to me, sounds like you have pretty much same truck as I do. As long as it is not hunting for gears, I tow in OD, come upon a hill, usually just turn it off and run in 3rd.
Like the other guys said, you will be fine in OD for almost all times. Push the button on a big hill if it starts hunting. I pull a 11,000 pound 5er in OD without issues.
Well if you believe Ford, you can run all day AT red line without hurting your engine.
You can also tow in OD without hurting your transmission.
Of course this assumes you stay within Fords GVWR and GCVWR.
If you don't..... You will:
A) Kill your truck
B) Void the warranty
C) Have an accident
D) Kill someone
E) Get sued
F) Your insurance won't cover you.
