I need to know if I have a 3000# front axle or a 3500# axle. The vehicle rating plate didn't give a letter code for the front axle. I have a 1972 Ford F250 4 x 4 with a 360 engine. I scraped away the dirt on the front axle and found these numbers cast right next to the differential housing: 44 6CF, (or maybe 8CF it was hard to tell). Can anyone tell me which axle I have?
I looked in the shop manual and see that a letter code K refers to axle: "3,500 6CF HD". But then an L Code refers to a "3,000 DANA 44 LOCK".
My main question is: the number I found - (44 6CF), seems to be a a combo of the two I found and I can't tell which one. (The 44 seems to refer to that DANA "44" LOCK 3,000# axle but the 6CF seems to refer to the 6CF 3,500# axle. Can anyone clear up this question?

While standing next to either of the front wheels and looking directly down at the axle hub which protrudes out from the wheel, a 3,000# Dana 44 axle will look like this:[/FONT]

whereas, a 3,500# Dana 44 axle will look like this:

Yes it did. It was a 3,000#. I was also told that you can look at the end of the locking hub. If the hub end is attached with allen screws it's a 3000. If it has bolts it's a 3500. Thanks for the help!
