I was wondering where you guys have been getting your conversion parts? The truck is a 79 250 4x4. 400 is getting a pretty good knock..so I think it's 429/460 time. If it's cheaper than building a 400. Need good torque for towing.
I checked L&L but the $$$ keeps piling up. I know I'm going to need new motor mounts, and the bell housing spacer, and different headers. L&L is about the only place I've been able to find in chassis. Thanks!
Almost forgot..what year of 460 is the best to find? Someone told me 78 wasn't a good year.
20 years ago I did a swap on my 78 F250 4x4 351m/400 to a 429, I took the poor man route.I bought 65 ford 390 motor mounts drill one hole, use left for right and right for left, ablong the trans mount support brkt, made new drive shaft, made a new alt brkt, and ablonged the ps pump brkt and it worked like a charm. but there are some companys out there that make a conversion kit that does it all. I use a 429 out of a 72 merc, 10 to 1 comp. It bolted right up to the C6.

Reason: spelling
The 400 has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 429/460 so you will not need to change trans, motor mounts and exhaust will be the only big parts to change. Jeff

Even though the 429/460 bell is the same as the 351m/400 I thought the 460 housing was 1/2" or so shallower than the 400?
The manual does not need a special flywheel, you just need to shim the bellhousing if using a 351/400 bellhousing. The 460 housing is about 3/8'' deeper than the M bellhousing. I built a 5/16'' shim out of plate and used the stock 1/8'' dust shield to create the needed 3/8'' total shim for my 460 swap using a 400 bellhousing.
Ok, starting to get a bit confused. As long as I stick with my C6 automatic I can bolt a 429 or 460 up without using the spacer plate to make up the 3/8 inch.
So all I would really need is a set of motor mounts, headers, and acc brackets?
You could use washers but then you have an open gap between the bellhousing and engine. Not to mention it would not be very stable . When I built my plate i used extended engine dowels and the plate goes over them, which made it very stable.
your 400 and 460 share the bell housing... all you need for an auto swap is the 460, 460 torque converter and flywheel, motor mounts, and exhaust... and if the motor is out of a car youll need a rear sump oil pan kit for the 460... also the car manifolds dont fit on the right side
Looks like i learned the hard way. when i swapped from 400 to 460, i kept the 400's converter. i did have the 460 flywheel though. is their a reason for having the 460 converter too.
What about the 400's starter. will that work in the 460? Is there any shims needed?

Reason: adding question
the 400 starter will work no problem... you could use the 400 torque converter if you dont mind about a half inch between the bellhousing and the engine... the 460 output shaft is a little longer so you need the 460 converter
in your original post you asked for what years to avoid... the only bad year was 1972... d2ve heads are garbage... and after 88 they went to fuel injected heads and they wont work with a carb manifold... otherwise anything else from 1968-1987 will work fine... 68-71 engines are high compression so watch what gas you use if you come across one (c8ve to d0ve castings)
