Hey
I was wondering which engine would be the best in my '89 F-250 4x4 5-speed? It now has the 7.5/460 in it. I want an engine that will give me decent power but gets better than 12 MPG. The only towing i do is hauling fire wood around the farm and 1 ton of sawdust biweekly. I also go to school every day, which is 15 miles away.
Thanks

your driving a heavy truck. installing a smaller motor like a 351w may gain you 1or2mpg at most. but the lose in power would be a lot. so my best advice would be to make sure you keep that motor tuned up well. keep your tire pressure were it should be and keep your foot out of it more. just doing these things may get you into the 14mpg range.
go with a high quality plug wires, motorcraft copper plugs, msd coil and maybe bump the timing a little as well. is this efi or carbed?
also change the fuel filter and run synthetics in everything you possibly can.
What size tires and gear ratio is in the truck?
OK...Its EFI and has 33" tires powered by a 4.10 rear axle. Im planning on getting a cold air intake to raise MPGs by a little. I was thinking on leaving her in there , but swapping it was "plan B".
yea you got a pretty good setup already. the intake and getting the exhaust done will help a bunch. that motor likes to breath . when i mean exhaust i mean from the manifolds back maybe even get some shortie headers . all will help big time.
strait pipes are for motors that are real hi hp and run at hi rpms. a good flowing Y pipe, hiflow cat (1) and 3" exhaust out stock location thru a flowmaster or magnaflow muffler will soot you well. yanking the stock manifolds for some ceramic coated headers would top off the package but can wait till funds allow. but haveing the rest of the exhaust done will help for sure. most shops can take care of ya for less then $400 and thats from a spendy shop.
that is correct. bigger mandral bent tubing will help big time on its own. but if you have to much flow then your gonna lose low end grunt and that will hurt mpg because you would need more throttle to get moving
The exhaust is in good shape, so could i just get a Flowmaster muffler? I wanna save a few bucks by not getting a complete exhaust kit (pipes, muffler, brackets, etc) and just getting a muffler.
Thanks.
You may want to think about the catylatic converter ,too. If it's factory, it's almost ten years old and may be starting to plug up.This will rob power but it will absoluely kill mileage. Replacing it is not inexpensive; these things do cost a bit to replace, but there are performance replacements that are a little cheaper than an oem converter and do a better job. If you are against a whole exhaust system, this may be the place to start.
