If I remember right, you can tell is it is from a car or a truck. The trucks had a knock senor port on the top rear of the block and the cars did not. A machine shop can probably tell you about the block coding or maybe a ford dealer can run the engine serial number and see if it pulls anything up.
Above the starter there is a casting code/engineering reference number... you may have to remove the starter or do some clean up with a wire brush and some gasoline
It'll start E6TE or something like that then a dash (-) or a space and 4 to 7 more letters and numbers. Ford gave a letter to each decade, C = 60's, D = 70's, E = 80's, F = 90's and so forth...the second space is the year it was produced, E6 = 1986...
