It looks like my power steering box or the pump resevoir is leaking, I can't tell which, and I will get it sprayed off eventually, but in the meantime, I am curious.
Can the power steering box be rebuilt by a do-it-yourself-er? Is there more to it than new seals? I also don't know which gear I have in it, the Bendix or the Ford. I see on AutoZone's website that the Bendix has a 4 bolt aluminium cover and the Ford has a 2 bolt cast iron cover, but due to the crud on the thing, I'm not sure where the cover is. Is there another way to tell?
The cover is on the top. The Ford box is pretty easy to take apart and put new seals in. You do need a special wrench to adjust the preload of a bearing.
Looking at mine from the top there are two bolts in the bottom corners and two more at the top corners that also hold a bracket that holds the brake lines as they exit the master cylinder reservoir. The two at the bottom are bolt heads. Where the bracket is attached, I'm looking at nuts on threaded studs, I reach down and cannot feel bolt heads for these, so I'm guessing they're studs?
If it is the stock application, you probably have the Bendix unit inasmuchas it was the standard in 1968. From my research, the Ford gear appeared in late '69 or '70. I do know that parts are much harder to find for the Bendix unit.
I recently installed a new (rebuilt) Bendix unit on my '68. I thought about switching over to the Ford box, but didn't feel like making the necessary mods to perch and steering shaft. Hence, I bought a lifetime guaranteed unit from O'Reilly for around $280.
