LS Install

Ok I have posted a couple of different times about my open differential on my 97 4x4 4.6. But I think I found what I want now.

http://store.summitracing.com/defaul....asp&x=13&y=10

This appears to be a factory ford LS unit made to go into my factory 8.8 open differential. How hard of a job is it for a mechanically inclined person with 0 experience with differentials to do this? How reliable are these units? 239 bucks seems pretty good what do ya'll think?

Oh yeah part number FMS-M-4204-F318 it should be the top one on the list. The 239 dollar one.

Thanks

That is the one that came factory. It is a pretty good unit. The one in my Mustang (28 spline) Still smokes both tires after 160,000 miles. You must know how to properly set the backlash of the gears and must install a new crush sleeve on the pinion. I would go ahead and replace the bearings while it's apart just to be safe.
You may try to find a book on differentials before tearing into it.

That does sound like there is alot to it. Might be easier to go get a good used one from a wrecker!

To install a whole rear end would be simple. Unbolt a few bolts here and there and voila! lol

I don't know if it would be easy, you would probably need a second set of hands and a couple jacks and jack stands, but would most definitly be easier than tearing into the inner workings of the rear end. Let us know how it goes. I was curious about doing this myself, but became a little overwhelmed with all the elements involved

do they come out easy or is there abunch of unforseen consequences in taking them out?
would it just be a matter of 4 bolts on the ujoins, the ubolts, unplugging w/e sensors there are and hookin up the new one the same way this came out?
