Ok, for all the guys out there using razors like the schick quatro and similar ones. How do you know when the head needs to be changed? I am having a hard time telling when the blades have had enough, everybody I talk to says theirs last at least a month if not longer, but it seems like mine are dull after 3 weeks to the point it hurts to shave. Am I missing something?
no, you're not... Mine are good for like 3 shaves, tops, then they start ripping. I've heard of those platinum single blades lasting a while, but a month? Dream on! I toss them after 3 shaves. I begin bleeding on the 4th.
I use a Mach 3 and change the blade every month, but I only shave maybe 3 times a week. I ordered some cryogentically frozen blades a while back and they are supposed to last three times longer and they did last close to it. Problem with me is that I never think about blades till I run out and dont have time to wait for them to come in the mail.
I use the Mach 3 also.
These blades will last almost a month for me.
The whole secret is to keep your razor away from your wife/significant other!
Man! My wife used my razor ONE time. That blade looked like someone had cut barbed wire.
Yeooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccchhhhhhhhh!
Barbasol and really hot water. Get that beard softened up and scrape that face!
IMO if it is ripping the whiskers out and not cutting, change the blade. I wish Nair would make something for us guys to put on our face, why do the gals get all the cool stuff?
I changed to a Norelco after 35+ years, most of it with a Trac II.
They said in the book to give it a month. I stuck it out, but could tell right away it was better than the last electric I tried. But after a month or so, it seems to work even better.
Pricey critter at about $90 at Costco, but other than keeping the Trac II for sideburns once in a while, I think I'll stick with it.
I use the Gillette Sensor Excel triple blades and they last from 3-5 shaves. Much longer than that and they start ripping the face off. I don't like their 4 blade design at all. The blade is too "floppy". With the old-time safety razors keeping the blade stored in oil helped extend the life.
Anyone know where to get one of the old safety razors?
If you mean one of these, probably in a second hand store/flea market. I got that one from my Grandpa's stuff when he passed.
I currently use Gillette Custom Plus, 2 blade disposables and get about 4 - 6 shaves with them, depending on how often I shave.
I used to use Sensor Excels - 2 blade, and they are actually quite impressive, if you shave everyday. I found that shaving less often means more strokes to get a clean shave, means the blades wear out faster. When I had to be presentable and shave everyday, for my job, I had it down to a science; 12 strokes, if I recall and the blades would last 2 - 3 weeks.
Shaving with blades for 35 yrs. I've been using the Mach II for some time. I just tried the Fusion 4 blade (definitely nicks less), and recently decided to try an electric razor after a recommendation from a friend that is a cop, and works 16 hr shifts. I tried four models, and finally settled on the Braun 7000 from Walmart. Cost is $130, if you don't like, you get your money back. The benefits: no water (nice for those of us living in cold winter climates), no mess, take it with you, no pulling, does a nice job, easy to clean, 55 mins per charge, and I really like it. It will not shave as close as the blade, but I don't see going back.

here is a tip to make the blades last longer. I got it from men's health magazine and it seems to be working for me. get a little cup/lid something like that and put enough rubbing alcohol in it to cover the blades. after you are done shaving, put the razor in the cup and leave it there until next time you shave. i have been doing this for the last month and a half and have not changed my razor blade(gilette m3 power) in that month and a half. I shave every day.Still getting a close shave and no pulling or knicking. the magazine claimed that the razors don't get very dull from shaving,it's the corrosion and rust that makes them dull.
