Need a little help with a wiring question...on a 1956 6 cylinder 223
Does the wire from the starter solenoid go to the resisitor terminal that is close to the block??? and then does a small wire go from the front terminal to the positive side of the coil. After that does another wire go from the negative terminal on the coil to the botton of the distributer. I know the book says that there will be hotter spark upon trying to start and then after the motor is running it will be cut down..If not working properly the points will burn up quickly...I do not understand how this works. Do I have it wired properly????
Thanks
I believe you're description is missing a wire from the ignition switch to the engine side of the ballast resistor. The wire from the solenoid is only powered when starting. The ignition switch wire provides power while running. The distributor points will be OK for the short start duration.
Randy
there are 2 terminals on the starter solenoid...The wire I am referring to coming from the solenoid is attached to the terminal marked (I) which I think stands for ingnition going to the terminal on the resistor closest to the engine.
Correct???
Thanks
I'm looking in my Shop Manual (page 73) and see a picture (Fig 1) showing the ballast resistor and coil. It shows the (+) pole of the coil having two wires connected to it. One comes from the ballast resistor and the other comes from the "I" terminal of the starter relay. The (-) coil terminal is connected to the distributor. The other wire on the ballast resistor goes to the "coil" terminal of the ignition switch. If your wiring is still stock, maybe that will help.
Motorhaven (or ebay) carries Shop Manuals. Buy one. You'll be glad you did.

Fleetline,
RJ is right on the shop manual. If you "need it now", I think George has the wiring diagram for a '56 on Earl's World, under the "technical" section.
Than ks for all of the info...I have a shop manual and also an old motors repair manual but nothing shows in detail....When I purchased the truck a few years ago it was disassembled and sometimes I get stuck on some issues
It is really good to have guys like you out there to help
Thanks again
