So just to re-cap this... All BII's have the d28 and a 7.5 rearend, except for the 1990 model year. So in order to do the D35 swap you must also do the rear 8.8 swap to have the correct ring gear size. So the D35 is an 8.8, and the D28 is the 7.5. So the best bet would be to find an 90 BII for the front and rear ends. I would like to do the 5.0 swap, I have a complete engine. but I am not planning on a lift or huge tires. probobly a decent 235 series tire. Its not going to be a serious offroader or anything.. do you thing the 7.5 and the D28 will hold up?

I was researching into this whole axle thing, I found out that the 83-84 BII's have a 6.75" rearend. What Front axle do they have then? Is it the D28? I guess I didnt even know there was a 6.75, That is tiny. Just lookin underneath it looks like a 7.5 but its rainy and wet so im not going to check out the ID tag till tomorrow.

D28-d35

I have a 89 with a D28 and 7.5 rear end run 235 tires and have ran it pretty hard off road I have not broken it yet, others have done mild offroading and snaped the end of the shaft.I think tire size may also play a part in this. How about some of you other guys how are your front ends holding up?

OFF TOPIC, SORT OF:

Your best bet for a Ford 8.8 rear axle swap is getting one out of a wrecked '86-up (?) Ranger (http://www.car-part.com is your friend). Not so much work as far as the leaf spring perches and shock mounts. And, if you get one with the same gears (for the 4x4's), more than likely, you can find one with the 9" drums as well... just in case your replacement axle needs brake parts and you have good/newer parts on your current axle

I was looking at an 1993 explorer today at work and It looked like it would just bolt in except the shock mounts were WAY off. Are you saying that the Ranger is more similar to the BII? 86 and up 8.8's? Are all Rangers and X's The same length Wheel to Wheel?

90 Bronco II

You guys that have a 90 Bronco II lucked out not having to swap in heavier components that will hold up to oversized tires D-35.I am going to run my D-28 till she blows,I think at that point I will do the swap.

I haven't taken exact measurements, but, the Rangers are spring-over-axle in the rear, like the BII. The Explorers are spring-under-axle, at least most 91-94's I have taken any hard look at in the parking lots around here. Remember, the BII is basically a shortened-frame Ranger with a different cab on it -- there are a LOT of interchangeable parts, especially suspension/axle parts. Most Ranger/Explorer/BII axles (91-94 Explorers, anyhow) are the same width (at least I have yet to see any hard data evidence otherwise). The problem with the Explorer rear axle swap is more than likely, you'll have to get new spring perches and cut off the existing ones -- more work

I have to look into it a bit further, but I also believe that the early Bronco (66-75/6/7) axles are close, which makes an easier SAS to a Dana 30 up front, and even a 9" rear. Eventually, I am going to do a complete write-up for a low-buck, high-bang suspension/drivetrain buildup/lift for those interested in either keeping their 2.8/2.9 or otherwise....

First off thank you for all your input, So a Ranger 8.8 will bolt right in then, great!! I am currently planning on swpping the 2.8 for an 5.0 Ho out of a mustang I had. Now my next question, I have been comparing photos and a 91 X looks like to me will bolt in my 84 BII. I have not dont any measuring but (just stating) it looks as if it will. I havnt looked at the ranger yet..
