Occasionally at speeds over 70mph the steering gets very sensitive. So sensitive that it is dangerous to drive. Rule out suspension, steering linkage and tires all new or within tolerances. If I put it in nuetral at high speed and turn the key to off and restart, the steering goes back to normal and safe to drive at high speed. There is a distinct feeling when it goes sensitive as if someone flipped a switch. Reducing speed below 30mph for several miles also seems to correct the problem, I know these vehicles have variable ratio steering but don't know if this could cause this type of problem. I have read many threads on this and believe others have just lived with it. Has me stumped that turning the engine off and back on corrects the problem for a few weeks.
hey SBClemons, what type of stabilizer did you install, and exactally where, I am having the same issue on a 99, and it drives me crazy, dont know why these trucks dont have them...
well I know that, ta least in my 98, there is a variable sensitivity power steerings system. This is designed to give easy steering at low speeds, and tighten up to make it drivable at higher speeds. Sounds like your system is not doing this properly.
solarwater: exactly, the variable ratio is going to easy at high speeds, it is very distinct almost like if it was switched on or off, my problem is why. What controls the variable ratio? As an aeronautical engineer I am pretty mechanical but this has me stumped. I am changing all the power sterring fluid to see if it helps.
The EVO (electronic variable orifice) module is inside the steering pump. It opens and closes based on vehicle speed as determined by speedo. Is your speedometer working correctly?
buzzard: Thanks for the info, yes the speedometer is working properly. Does the EVO have a plug or some type of connector that could have a false contact. Is the EVO replaceable or should I think about changing the whole pump? Turning the key off and back on corrects it temporarly, thats why I am lookig for some type of electrical fault. Again thanks, you went right to the point on the EVO, on another thread I read that the variable ratio had nothing to do with the speed of the vehicle and only to the ammount the steering was taken off center and that it actually got easier at high speeds, common sense told me that could not be right.
There is an EVO actuator with two pins. The resistance between the two should be between 8 and 16 ohms. From what I've read, pump replacement is the fix. Also, check all other steering components from hoses to ball joints to make sure they're not to blame.
Me personally, I hated the feel of my Expy's steering and added a stabilizer just days after I bought my truck. I probably need a replacement stabilizer these days since I've put over 115k miles on the original part.
Thanks buzzard, I will ck the resistance. No leaks, I don't think I have ever had to add fluid. All mechanical parts, suspension and steering new or within tolerances. I am going to add a stabilizer just for security, as i drive 80+ for 40 miles every day.

Ive installed a rough country steering stab and still think its to sensitive!!! Does that evo valve have anything to do with what I think looks like a tone ring and infare red sensor on the steering column under that dash? I have 2 books a Hanes and Chiltons and there is no mention of what it is on the column... Suspenion is all okay got 31 BFGs and tire pressures I run are about 35F 40R Would like to get this thing to drive like a truck Hell my wifes neon has stiffer steering than my EXPY!!! Was thinking of having a Alinement shop possible fix the problem with caster adjustments but there are some drawbacks to that I think
Taumac, according to Buzzard88 the EVO is in the steering pump and is activated by the speedometer. I don't know what you are seeing on the steering column but I doubt it is a sensor for the EVO. It is hard to believe that engineers would design a system that if it malfunctions it would go to a dangerous situation like it does. Common sense would say that it should go to stiff stearing in a malfunction.
