Got a stock modern horn on my 55 panel, along with a cow horn. Have the cow as a supplemental horn on 3 vehicles....is great. You can give a polite "moo" to the car in front of you while they talk on their cell phone, and they don't even get mad, because they're not 100% sure what it is or where it came from.
A loud bellow works great when driving by the golf course as the swing begins...again, being a lower tone, no one is really sure where it comes from, especially when driving the 95 Fleetwood.
Unlike AX, I do partake with the hornitations, and see the use of the horn as an art form, with the judicious use only enhancing the situation, sort of like being the conductor of an orchestra, or my teacher with the ruler tapping the knuckles of the unruly student. We're not talking about constant tooting at everyone here; just a nuance from time to time. I find it helps the idiot cell phone user to pay more attention to driving if reminded.
Eds F100: What kind of horns do you have there?
I know of one site from Florida which carries an extensive line of $$ horns and would like to save up for a nice set some day.

Horny bugger

I've always considered installing a speaker in the grill with a microphone!
What is the purpose of a REALLY loud horn? To frighten the person? Get their attention? Any horn has substantial sound to get someones attention. If the horn doesn't work, you can always use sign language to let them know you want their attention, that gets their attention all the time.

I think a loud horn is a safety item. With people cruising around with the AC on, subs turned up, and yacking on the cell phone they tend to be oblivious to their surrondings and consequences of their actions with the wheel. When I need my horn I want to get peoples attention--not firghten them but certainly make them snap to the situation at hand.
My sense is MOST people respond better to a little coaxing with a toot of the horn then to the Unicorn Wave.
I disagree that any horn will do the trick. I have heard some horns on modern vehicles that sounded pretty puny to me.
I like the 4 horn caddy idea. I'll check it out at the bone yard.
I used my original trumpet horns for my '51, but gutted out the 6 volt parts and put in new 12 volt Blazer replacement units from autozone. Work very well, very loud, sound kinda European, and look stock. Not a good picture, but...
I went a few steps louder than the triple chrome "Cannonball Express" aka trucker's train horn, and suffice to say, what I put on my truck is too loud for city or residential traffic. On the highway, however, I truly believe that nothing is overkill. I've had more than one A4 or 325i cut across 4 lanes of traffic bombing for their exit and causing me to slam unreservedly on my brakes. When that happens, you can't have too loud a horn.
I deliberately mounted the horns in a very visible spot, and it provides lots of highway amusement blowing them for truckers. There aren't any Hadley or Grover horns out there that blow as loud as and low as the Kahlenberg series 2 tugboat horns.
Just so you know, I collect antique boat horns as a hobby, I'm not just a nutcase who wanted the loudest thing out there for blasting people. I keep my horns polished like museum pieces for horn and whistle events. If you've seen the hornblasters prank movies, well, that's not me and I don't condone that sort of thing.

Speaking of the Caddy 4 tone horns, I bought me a set from a junkyard and have them ready to install on something. Probably on the panel in place of the roadrunner horn I use as the stock horn.
They would sound good on that Avanti....hmmm.
What's wrong with Grover's> I've got a nice pair of Grover trumpets that came of the City of Prinevill Railway train for my 53, and they are LOUD. I've also got a set oh I believe Hadley smaller sized trumpets that I am going to get rid of, and they're pretty loud too.

When my truck is done I want horns that are as loud as I can get off 12V. My theory is that this thing is going to take alot of work, as most of your trucks have. If I can prevent some no-mind from smacking my hard work, I will. I could care less if someone cranks my new truck or car, take it to the body shop and let them do it. Someone hits my 60, and its back into my shop until its done correctly. I've had it 18 years and plan to keep it for many more, new vehicles come and go, this one is staying with me (hopefully dent free).
