I have a 1990 F250 that does not crank easily the first time it is cranked each day. Decide to put in new glow plugs. 1st plug no problem. Second plug unsrewed fine, but will not pull out of hole. Thinking severe carbon build up, I kept fooling with it, but after an hour of penetrating oil, pulling, with pliers, screwing it back in and out, I figured I better try to find someone who might know what is going on with this thing. Any ideas would be appreciate. Thanks.
One of the best things I have seen posted here for a while is to chuck it up in a drill and keep working it out while soaking it with PB Blaster or the like.
You should bring that cylinder to top dead center so if it breaks off there is still a possibility of pulling the injector and vacuuming it out.
Just out of curiosity, what kind was the one you removed?
Recommended glow plugs are Motorcraft/Beru ZD 9 because they do not swell and give you the problems you are having.
Just remember any fluid you put in the cylinder must be removed before starting by cranking with the GP removed. If you leav e fluid in there it could hydrolock and bend a rod.........and/or snap off the starter.
I replaced my glow plugs in my 86 6.9 all but one, top snapped off. Truck still started so I left it till I found the time to fix, then forgot all about it, till one started the truck and it made one hell of racket! Turns out the broken glow plug worked its way lose and popped right out! You get lucky sometimes.
AutoLite 1108 I'm replacing them with Delphi. 4 replaced, 4 stuck. Guess I'll have to wait for a week end when I have nothing to do, and remove the fuel lines, get the drill out and have at it. Thanks for the tip. I thought changing glow plugs was as easy as changing spark plugs. Surprised again.
Good luck with the Delphi units, I will only install Motorcraft in mine.
I have never had one swell and stick, so I will not even experiment with others.

There is a section on changing GPs.
I don't know anything about Delphi. But unless you know for sure they are better than motorcraft/beru, I wouldn't use them.
