Im looking to swap out my 223 and am wanting to find something that is compatible to highway driving and longer trips. Ive done some research and found a sb tranny adaptor for Y blocks ($695). My question is what kind of mpg could I expect in a 63 shortbed with 3.25 gears and a T5 or AOD tranny and a stock Y block (maybe headers?). Am I dreaming If I wanted 17 or 18 on the highway. I would love to be able to cruise comfortably at 75, after rebuilding athe front end of course. Any thoughts would help.
I have a 56 with a 272 Yblock I changed the gears in the dana 44 from a 3.73 to a 2.72. I got 20+ MPG @ 70 mph on the highway. Its very doggy from the start but out on the road it'll run 80mph no problem. I'm using the stock 3 on the tree trans
You will need to get a Y-block manual bell, as the 223 bell won't fit a Y to my memory. I don't have one here to check though.
The AOD will work using the Bendtsen adapter, which is what I guess you're looking at. Keep in mind this swap has a lot of hidden costs, so add up before you start.
I think 17-18 is easily doable. I got 14-15 mpg on the Interstate with 4.27 gears at 65 (uh, or thereabouts. )
thanks for the encouraging news guys. I like the t5 better than the AOD. Thanks for the link to the y-block site lots of good info there. Now I just gotta start keeping an eye out for a good 292.
Rock, how much effort was involved in installing a hydraulic clutch for the T5?
McLeod used to make a hydraulic throwout setup for the T5 that was pretty easy to configure; I haven't looked lately to see if it's still available, but probably so.
Actually, the signature pretty well applies to anything in life that needs fixing- nothing like fixing one broken plumbing fitting, & ten hours later, you've re-plumbed 95% of the house, & the other 5% is getting done right after the kids go to bed.
No hydraulic clutch on the Vicky. It was already a standard tranny car and used the same linkage. It does require a different clutch disc tho. 10" to fit the T-5 shaft on the car. I think truck clutches are 11". Saw a bellhousing for a truck on ebay. Also a 292 truck engine. Depends on where you are located if it could be worth the $.
