When I start the truck when it's cold, it has trouble cranking like the battery(ies) is/are going bad. The alternator is charging and the truck is fine after running for a while.
My question is, should I check for anything else? If I change the batteries, should I do both? I know I'd have to match the CCA's if I replace only one. What CCA's should I look for? Does anyone recommend getting higher CCA on the batteries? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I would take it down to your local auto parts store and let them put it on a tester, and they should tell you if it is the batteries. They should do it for free. Napa Gold is a highly rated battery
yep have them tested i use napa golds and replace them both. usually replacement batteries are higher cca than orginals anyway but they will have a listing for your truck with the correct batteries for your truck.
Yea I'd definitely try to get them tested - just to make sure... Personally, I would definitely replace both batteries at the same time! I kinda think I remember reading in a post that Interstate makes a battery that is really good for a PSD - not 100% sure on that though.
I have used Interstate in the past for all of my vehicles (trucks, motorhomes, wifes car) with excellent results. I did however read somewhere that the actuall Motorcraft battery was rated very high for the diesel application. I hate to recomend something stock but I know I saw that somewhere. More CCA always seems like a good thing to me but I don't know if there is a limit before you start to shorten the life of the starter?
Years ago, I had a 79 F-250 with a 460. I think I had a 850 CCA in that. I could have driven across town with just the starter and still listened to the radio with the headlights on.
I have interstates in mine and they crank it fine but they are a bit old. Might consider new ones before I start travelling and pulling the trailer to far off places.
I don't mean to hijack but does anyone have a good remedy for corrrosion on the battery box, hold down bar, and cables?
there is a spray that comes out red, that i got at the local JohnDeere dealer. you can probably get it at any parts store. just clean the area, and spray a good coating on this, and it will prevent the buildup.

Warm water and baking soda mixed will kill the corrosion. Then clean all terminals and connections with a wire brush. There are anti corrosion sprays and geases that strokin it mentioned that work well to keep corrosion to a minimum. I use them as well and have only found them at the tractor stores.
