ive been havinga problem here for a while....vibration from the front left suspension area, started as only a slight bump noise when coming to a stop, but has escalated to a constant ratle in the front left(on bumpy roads, etc.)...u joint seems tight, no play...shock bushings fine, any other ideas?? i have to do my front rotors and pads asap and want to get to the bottom of this problem at the same time. thanks alot guys
2w drive or 4wd?
Front wheel bearing /hub unit and or needle bearings that support the axle shaft stub that passes through the hub.
Make sure your 4x hubs are unlocking if you have 4wd.

it's 4x4 with manual hubs, they're unlocking, b/c i can turn the axleshaft by the u-joint when its unlocked....sounds like wheel bearings...you made it sound like there's two sets, are there?? thanks forty
Sway bar to axle bushings are a common problem,as well as sway bar links. Both need
to be checked with the axle loaded(on the ground,or a drive on lift) if you check them with the axle hanging they may seem OK.
I have a intermittent rattle in the front also. It sounds like a lugnut in a hubcap, but I don't have hubcaps.
I heard it before and assumed it was the hub because it was shelled out when i disassembled it. The noise came back though. When I took the hub out the other day, it was shelled again. I found a great deal of vertical movement in the end of the passenger side drive shaft. I looked at the u joint, and it appears that it has been hitting the steering knuckle. I think there is a bearing gone in the end of the front axle, but i have searched the forums for 2 hrs to no avail.

The wheel bearings themselves are a sealed unit, the needle bearings are not and are the only thing that supports the axle stub passing through the wheel bearing hub.

Had the same sound on my 99 4x4. Did not want to believe the swaybar bushings were doing that. Pulled the swaybar off and wha-lha the sound was gone. replaced bushing and reinstalled, problem solved until just last week. Now I have to replace the top bushing in my draglink. Found it loose and has some play that is making a similar noise.
